The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Rzeszow University of Technology has been conducting research and teaching activities since 1963 (it has been operating as the Department since 1999). Since the establishment and operation of the department, six people have been the head of the Department. Currently - since 2015 - this position is held by Prof. Grzegorz Budzik, D.Sc. Eng.

A team of thirty people specializes in testing machine components, especially propulsion systems and gears. Research issues include the design and technology of cylindrical and bevel gears as well as high gear ratios. Furthermore, research and analyses include applications of computer-aided modeling methods and simulation of machine elements based on CAD/CAE/FEM systems.

Rapid prototyping techniques and reverse engineering, based on coordinate measurement methods, play an important role in the scientific activity of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The works carried out in this area concern: analysis of the structure of products manufactured with the use of 3D printing methods and testing their functional properties and mechanical strength. Research issues also include the use of additive technologies in medical engineering, industrial design and their industrial applications with the use of information systems based on the assumptions of the Industry 4.0.
